Hospitals in Bali

Every accredited international and private hospital foreigners actually use, compared on accreditation, emergency capability, English support, location and insurance. Independent — no hospital pays to be ranked here.

The Short Answer

The hospitals foreigners rely on are the accredited international and private hospitals clustered in the south — BIMC, Siloam, Kasih Ibu, Prima Medika, Bali Royal (BROS) and Surya Husadha — backed by the large public referral hospital, Prof. Ngoerah (formerly Sanglah), in Denpasar.

The Two Tiers

Bali’s hospitals split into two groups. Knowing which tier you need saves both time and money.

International & private

Built for a mixed local and foreign patient base: English-speaking doctors, international insurance and cashless billing, shorter waits and private rooms — at a higher price.

Best for: most tourists and expats, anything short of a critical emergency

Public

Led by Prof. Ngoerah (Sanglah) in Denpasar, the island’s referral backbone for complex trauma, ICU and specialist cases. Lower cost; English support and comfort vary, and waits can be long.

Best for: severe trauma and critical care — where you may be taken regardless of preference

The Major Hospitals

The shortlist foreigners most often need. Verify current hours and services with the hospital before you rely on them.

How to Compare Them

Five criteria, weighted by what matters for your situation rather than in a fixed order.

  1. Accreditation

JCI (international) and KARS (Indonesian national) signal audited safety and quality standards.

  2. Emergency capability

Not every hospital runs a full 24-hour ER or has trauma capacity.

  3. English-speaking staff

Reliable at the international hospitals; verify it for public facilities and by department.

  4. Location and airport proximity

Southern hospitals dominate, and some sit minutes from Ngurah Rai.

  5. Cost and insurance

Confirm whether the hospital bills your insurer directly, or whether you pay and claim back.

When a Specialty Points You Elsewhere

This is a hospital directory. For dental work, fertility and IVF, cosmetic procedures or stem-cell enquiries, a dedicated specialist centre will usually serve you better than a hospital. We say the category exists in Bali and point you at the specialist rather than writing treatment content we should not.

Private vs public hospitals in Bali is covered in its own guide.
