JCI and KARS are the two accreditations that actually mean something in Indonesia. Here is what each audits, what it does not cover, and how to check a hospital’s status yourself.
KARS is Indonesia’s national hospital accreditation and is effectively mandatory — most hospitals you would consider hold it. JCI is the international standard, far harder to obtain, and only a handful of Indonesian hospitals carry it. Neither is a guarantee about your individual surgeon.
Accreditation audits the system around the care, not the person delivering it. Check both.
They answer different questions, and a hospital can hold one without the other.
The international benchmark, run from the United States. Audits patient-safety systems, infection control, medication management and clinical governance against a published standard. Expensive and slow to obtain, so it signals real institutional commitment.
Rare in Indonesia — treat it as a strong positive, not a baseline
Indonesia’s national accreditation, graded in tiers (Paripurna being the highest). Every hospital operating properly should hold it, so its presence is a floor rather than a distinction — the grade is what carries the information.
Ask for the grade, not just "KARS accredited"
Neither accreditation vets the individual surgeon who will operate on you, guarantees an outcome, or says anything about price. They audit the institution’s systems, which is necessary but not sufficient.

Accreditation expires. A certificate with no visible valid-until date is not evidence of anything.
JCI and KARS both publish lists of accredited organisations. A hospital appearing on its own website but not on the register is the case worth asking about.
Hospital groups accredit individual sites. A group holding accreditation does not mean the branch nearest you does.
Confirm the specialist’s registration and where they trained. This is the step most patients skip and the one that most affects the result.

Public vs private — Prof. Ngoerah (Sanglah)Not necessary, but it is the strongest single signal available. A KARS-Paripurna hospital with a well-credentialled surgeon is a better bet than a JCI hospital with an unverified one.
No. It means the institution’s systems have been audited against a published standard. Outcomes depend on your condition and the clinician, neither of which accreditation addresses.
Look for the valid-until date and cross-check the issuing body’s register. Accreditation lapses, and a lapsed certificate still looks impressive on a wall.
No. KARS accredits hospitals; smaller clinics operate under a different licensing regime. For clinics, the licence and the individual practitioner’s registration are what to check.
